Frame Ledger

Notes on moving images

A closer look at framing, light and the small decisions that make a scene feel alive.

Every frame begins with a conversation between the camera, the light and the people around it.
Framing

Leave room for the moment

A frame does not need to explain everything. Sometimes the space beside a subject tells us as much as the subject itself. Watch the edges and leave a little room for a gesture to unfold.

On location

Find the light before the angle

Spend a moment watching how daylight moves through a space before choosing a camera position. An open doorway or a pale wall can shape a scene without making the lighting feel conspicuous.

Editing

The pause between two shots

Rhythm is not only about cutting quickly. A short pause can give a look, a sound or a change in expression the time it needs. Let the scene decide when the next image should arrive.

About the ledger

A small collection of observations on visual storytelling. Read a note, look at a familiar scene again, and notice one thing you had not seen before.
